What is an emulator for video games?

That classic console that’s gathering dust in the closet, the one with all those beloved games. Without a BIOS, the emulator doesn’t have access to the console’s memory or even have the ability to read it. It’s a unique kind of software, a clever program, that mimics the hardware of a different computing device, usually a vintage video game console. What if you could bring that whole experience, perfectly intact, to your modern computer or even your phone?

Atari 2600, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket Color, TurboGrafx-16/16 CD, Neo Geo AES, NEO-Geo Pocket Color, NEO-Geo CD-ROM, Neo Geo MVS/AES, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), and NES emulators. You can play games from other consoles on your Android device with a variety of emulators. A good emulator lets the console’s personality come through by blending in with the background.

When I experiment with new emulators, I try a few games, experiment with the settings, and observe how the program functions after an hour or two. Knowing what you value in an experience is ultimately the key to selecting the best emulator for a given console. I always search for software that doesn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the memories I’m revisiting. I usually know I’ve made a good choice if I find myself thinking more about the games than the emulator itself.

With so many options and such a wide range of emulators, choosing the right one can be a little difficult. Selecting the best emulator can be a little challenging due to the abundance of options and variety. If you find yourself overwhelmed at the sheer number of options, feel free to use the top 10 list below. It’s simple to use and allows you to run original BIOS dumps with cheat codes. Remember that many games were only available on cartridges or discs, so unless the game is patched to run as a disc image rather than on a disc or cartridge, downloading an emulator and a game will not provide you with anything playable.

I suggest using an emulator called BizHawk if you’re using a PC. Download as many game versions as you can, but don’t download more than one at a time unless you plan to burn them to disc or backup them. It has a debugger, cheat features, and a few other intriguing features. See the tutorials by clicking this link.
